Maybe your life is different than mine, but the moments when I most need connection and advice are seldom times when I can walk away and meditate for an hour. Usually, my times of need are when I’m riding the rails of a coming train wreck that I don’t want to be part of, and I have a long to-do list that can’t wait.

If you let the wreck happen instead of taking decisive action, you descend into chaos which leads to more fear and a vicious circle. You start feeling like the entire world is against you and there’s no escape. Frankly, it’s a horrible place where no one wants to be.

How Do You Stop the Train and Get Where You Want to Go?

First, I want you to know that you CAN. You don’t have to let the fear chain you to an out-of-control ride. You can connect to your Wisdom, God, Soul, Universe, or whatever you call it and end up in not just an okay place, but somewhere better than you can currently imagine.

Here’s what you do…

5 Ways You Can Connect (even while doing the dishes!)

1. Acknowledge what’s happening and say it out loud or at least mumble it. When you speak out loud, you’re connecting with the universe, and it makes you be present in the problem. So, speak your problem out loud and ask the universe for a solution.

2. Breathe. We forget to breathe, especially when we’re afraid, but your breath is like an umbilical cord to your Guides. Breathing is a connection to God, Source, Universe, or whatever you call it. Breathe out fear and breathe in wisdom.

3. Tune in. We tend to run from one thing to another when we’re facing a big problem. We do it because we’re afraid to be in our truth and feel our emotions. Maybe we won’t like the answer, maybe there isn’t one, or maybe you feel you’re not worthy of asking for help. Regardless of what’s going on, when you ask the universe for a solution and connect to it through your breath, you must tune in and give it space to answer.

Tune into your surroundings and notice what you smell. The smell can be an imagined thing or real. You might smell dish soap, roses, the baby’s diaper, your dog’s wet fur, or any number of things. Next, notice how that smell makes you feel and describe it using just one word.

4. Focus. Pay attention to your surroundings.

Listen to your surroundings. What do you hear? How does it make you feel? Pick just one sound and call it something or give it a name. If it’s a bunch of things or words, pick the one that jumps out at you.

5. Examine. This fifth step helps to calm you further and shift your awareness from fear into love.

Look at your hands and examine them. What do they look like? How do you feel about your hands? Describe your hands in one word.

You can do the above five steps anytime and anywhere—even during a meeting, while walking your dog, or as you try to round up kids for dinner. Each step takes just a few seconds.

If you were following along and doing the exercise while reading, how do you feel? It only took a few minutes to go through the first five steps, but in that time, you gave yourself a moment to connect and calm down.

We can’t get the solution to our problems when fear restricts us. The solution comes when you relax, connect, trust, and let the information come to you.
